Valaciclovir is used to treat infections caused by certain types of viruses, including cold sores (herpes labialis), genital herpes infection, and shingles (herpes zoster). It is thought to work by preventing the growth of the herpes virus, which causes cold sores.

These side effects may be worse if you take valaciclovir for more than a few days. It is not known whether valaciclovir causes more serious side effects than some other antiviral drugs.
The use of Valaciclovir is not recommended in people with HIV infection (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
